The idea of poultry came out on 2020 Dec and the land was already available. The project begun on Jan 2021 where we started with hatching eggs in an incubator. We had 1000 eggs in an incubator and we were able to hatch 600 chicken whereby we started reading them with chick mash for a period of 2 months then to growers mash within 2 months then to layers mash for the female and kienyeji mash for the males.
We later put the males and females the ratio of 1:8 and sold the rest of the males. Then we ordered 2000 eggs from outside and we were able to hatch 1000 chicks which wasn’t economical so we just hatched from our own chicken eggs. The demand for chicken increased so we decided to buy our own incubators with a capacity of 528 eggs and another of 1115 capacity. Then we started the idea of selling chicks and eggs. When we saw the demand of chicks and eggs increasing, then we decided to start a mixer to manufacture our own poultry feeds. We bought raw materials and prepared our own feeds and reduced the cost of production and planted grass called zola for our chicken and also started maggot farming which later which became a challenge due to weather. We just continued with azola.
Here the idea of coming together with community came up so we had to employ people from the community to help us with duties in the farm and also help us sale our products. We sold our chicken where they were mature at the age of 6 months and left some for hatching eggs to continue with the production of more chicks. We bought a freezer to preserve our chicks when the demand is low to help reduce costs.
